motive works because people show up like people. These are the cultural rules — the vibe we're protecting. The enforceable legal terms live in the Terms of Service, but these are what actually make motive feel like motive.
Show up as yourself
Real name. Real photo. Real account. If someone showed up to your hangout and looked nothing like their profile, that would be weird. Same rule for everyone.
Show up when you say you will
RSVPing to an event is a promise to actually be there. If plans change, cancel in the app so the host knows. Repeatedly ghosting events is grounds for account removal — because it makes motive stop working for everyone else.
Talk like humans
Group chats and DMs are for coordinating a hangout with people you're about to meet. Be warm. Be direct. Ask questions. Don't pile on. Don't use slurs, threats, or targeted harassment. If you wouldn't say it to someone's face at a coffee shop, don't type it in a motive chat.
This is not a dating app
motive is for making friends. Romantic or sexual pressure on other users is grounds for immediate removal. If you meet someone you want to date, that's a real thing, but let it happen off motive — this space is for friendship, not for hitting on people who came to make friends.
Meet in public
Events should be at public or semi-public places. If you're hosting something at your home or a private space, be explicit about the setup and give people enough info to decide whether to attend. Nobody should be surprised by where they end up.
Don't sell, recruit, or promote
motive is for hangouts. Not for MLMs, not for pitching your app, not for recruiting for anything, not for running promoted events on behalf of a business (yet — we'll open that up when we do). If you're here to hang out, you're welcome. If you're here to farm leads, you're not.
Look out for each other
You're meeting people you don't know. Use common sense: meet in public, tell a friend where you're going, leave if anything feels off. If someone at an event behaved in a way that concerns you, tap the report option — we review every report within 24 hours. You can also block anyone instantly from their profile or the event attendee list.
What happens if you break these
Depending on what happened and whether it was a pattern, we may remove specific Content, warn you, suspend your account temporarily, or permanently ban you. For anything involving harassment, threats, sexual content directed at users, or safety concerns involving minors, the response is immediate permanent removal. Decisions are made by a human moderator; you can appeal by emailing safety@joinmotive.app.
How to report someone
Tap the report option on any event or attendee. For urgent safety issues, email safety@joinmotive.app. For anything involving a suspected minor, see our Child Safety Standards.
The short version
Be a real person. Show up. Be kind. Meet in public. Not a dating app. Report anything sketchy. That's it.
